Follow The Need International brought its community in The Villages, Florida, together to collect more than 9,400 pairs of shoes in a fundraiser supporting Guatemala. At pickup, volunteers gathered beside a Funds2Orgs truck for a group photograph, with the collection total displayed in the video for the Follow the Need shoe drive fundraiser.

The June 5, 2024, Funds2Orgs video marked the organizations’ fourth fundraiser together. For a faith-based group looking to connect local participation with an overseas cause, the story offers a concrete example: supporters donated shoes, and the organization raised funds for its chosen purpose.

A community organization with a wider mission

Follow The Need International is a Christian humanitarian nonprofit based in The Villages. Its leadership includes founder Lila Vilain and co-founder Richard Vilain. The organization says its work began by meeting needs close to home and grew to include international programs.

Its local benevolence programs include food-pantry support and participation in the Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree program, including bicycles for children. That background helps readers understand the organization behind the shoe collection. This group was already engaged in rallying people and resources around a cause.

In the 2024 video, Lila explains that the organization intended to send that year’s funds to Guatemala. The purpose gave supporters a reason to participate beyond clearing space in a closet: their shoes could help the organization raise money for its humanitarian work.

The funds and the shoes serve different purposes

A shoe drive fundraiser connects your supporters’ donated shoes to funds your organization can use. Funds2Orgs pays by weight after it receives and processes the collection. The shoes enter a reuse network where micro-entrepreneurs sell footwear through their small businesses.

The cause receiving the funds is separate from where the shoes go. Funds2Orgs combines collections from different fundraisers. In Follow The Need’s case, Guatemala was the stated purpose for the funds. That does not establish where the collected shoes went.

Explaining this distinction helps your supporters understand what they are contributing to. You can name your organization’s fundraising purpose and describe how usable shoes continue into another market without suggesting that every pair will be delivered directly to your chosen beneficiary.

A repeat partnership made visible on pickup day

The collection total gives this story scale, but the group photograph shows the people behind it. Volunteers stood together beside the truck after gathering thousands of pairs. A video still also records a last-minute shoe drop-off, with bags lined up outside a home.

The fourth fundraiser is useful because it shows that the organization returned to doing a Follow the Need shoe drive fundraiser. When considering another shoe drive fundraiser, evaluate whether it fits your group’s available people, storage space, and fundraising plans.

A repeat drive also gives your team a chance to improve its own process. After pickup, record which reminders brought questions, where sorting took time, and which volunteers want to help again. Those notes can make the next collection easier to organize.

Make your own collection easy to join

Begin with a clear explanation of the cause and the contribution you are asking for. Tell supporters where to bring shoes, which dates apply, and how to reach your organizer. Confirm those details before announcing the drive so interested people can act on the invitation.

When preparing for pickup, coordinate with your fundraising coach and logistics team. Funds2Orgs recommends two to three volunteers for every 50 bags to help load the truck. Set a clear collection deadline and decide how to handle final deliveries before loading begins.

Use the current shoe drive FAQ for accepted footwear, packing, and pickup requirements. That gives your team a shared reference when questions come in and keeps your instructions aligned with the program.

Give your community a clear reason to participate

The Follow The Need shoe drive fundraiser connected a named humanitarian purpose with a practical contribution people could make locally. Supporters didn’t need to travel to Guatemala to take part. They could contribute shoes in their own community and help the organization raise funds.

If you are organizing for a church, ministry, or faith-based nonprofit, explore how a faith-based shoe drive fundraiser works. Then talk with a fundraising coach about your cause, available volunteers, and collection plans. A purpose and a workable plan give supporters a clear starting point.
