Have you ever considered life in a developing nation or the social impact jobs created when you extend the life of shoes you no longer need? The fact is that when nonprofits, schools, faith-based groups, or other organizations do shoe drive fundraisers, they’re making an incredible impact in three key ways.
First, shoe drive fundraisers aren’t just an opportunity to raise funds for a local community in our country. It does so much more. The second win for this kind of fundraiser is for the planet. In other words, this fundraiser lowers our carbon footprint. And the third aspect of shoe drive fundraising is the social impact jobs it creates worldwide.

What Are Social Impact Jobs?
Social impact jobs are all about creating positive change. It doesn’t matter what type of industry or approach. Jobs that make a social impact aim to improve the lives of people. Sure, making a living is essential. However, social jobs are about making the world a better place or empowering people. In other words, giving people a hand-up.
Micro-entrepreneurs operate small businesses worldwide. For a variety of reasons, such as systemic poverty, social conflict, limited resources, and education, many people around the world need a hand-up. When our partners do a shoe drive fundraiser, they’re doing that for people they may never meet.
We partner with 4,000 micro-entrepreneurs worldwide. They live in countries like Cambodia, Haiti, and Pakistan. The shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers provide them a chance to make a living in economies that don’t have a lot of opportunities. That’s why so many of our partners love our work. It’s a chance not only to raise funds, but to empower others.
Life in Developing Nations: A Daily Reality
We are fortunate in the United States, even if it might not seem so at times. For instance, when people are in need, we have organizations such as One Purse, soup kitchens, and thousands of others to address community needs. In developing nations, things are more complex. Life in many other countries is a balance between resilience and being resourceful.
For instance, the lack of proper infrastructure in developing nations may mean that basic things, such as drinking water, become a challenge. Imagine the daily walk of women and children to get drinking water because they don’t have access to it and must walk miles—daily—to find it. Charity: water states that 703 million people don’t have access to clean water.
As a result, millions of families have to create small businesses in developing nations by selling items. Selling products, such as shoes, batteries, clothing, and food, is the simplest way to earn a living. Our global partners have created community networks for support, solidarity, and shared purpose. And we’re so proud to be part of their stories as they resell the shoes collected.

The Impact of Shoe Drive Fundraisers
The impact of shoe drive fundraisers is profound. In short, it has enormous ripple effects that extend beyond the original purpose. Our shoe drive partners have a chance to raise funds for their cause. That’s so important. At a time when there’s less government funding, and donors are tougher to find, many great organizations need financial help.
One of the amazing things that most of our partners love is that they don’t have to ask for money. All their fundraising teams do is collect shoes. More shoes = More money. Our partners have raised funds for capital repairs, booster clubs, or new programs. Our team is very proud to be part of the stories of 20,000 partners.
But the impact of collecting shoes is much more significant, as we’ve mentioned. It’s an opportunity to create jobs that socially impact families worldwide. Instead of tossing shoes in the trash but collecting them, it’s a chance to give people in places like Cambodia or India an opportunity. We’re sure you agree that everyone should have a chance at economic opportunity.
How You Can Support Social Impact
Many people lament that old-school values are gone—or so it seems. Social media and the news make it appear that no one cares about anyone else. But is that true? We don’t think so. Each day, our team meets great people in communities across the U.S. They’re looking to help their local schools, health organizations, and even strangers in need.
If you’re inspired to make a difference not only in your community but also by empowering micro-entrepreneurs, you have an opportunity to do something different. Consider a socially impactful fundraiser that raises funds for your cause and changes lives. Make today a day when you take a small step and make a global impact.
