Environmental sustainability is crucial to the future of our planet. And, that means that as you’re working on your summer plans, you should also think about it. We know that today’s generation of leaders is seeking to ensure that everyone does his or her part to join the sustainability revolution.
Let’s take a quick look at the reality for our environment. Meaning, environmental sustainability is crucial to our future.
- Concerning municipal waste, there are 262 million tons produced.
- Americans throw away 81 pounds of clothes each year.
- When people recycle, there’s a lift of $36.6 billion in wages.
- Around the world, 70 percent of the population re-uses old clothes, including shoes.
So, with those facts framing the reasons why we all have to think about environmental sustainability, let’s take a look at 5 ideas!
1) Environmental sustainability doesn’t need air conditioning
Did you know that your air conditioner is one of the worst offenders for sustainability? We get it. It’s hot, and you need to cool off. As an example, the European Union, which is the second largest economy in the world after the U.S., people try not to use air conditioners. Instead, people in the EU and around the globe get crafty to stay cool. They turn off lights, which make rooms cooler. They close the blinds, particularly those on windows that face the south. The also use awnings, and of course, cool off in the water. If you must use an air conditioner, remember sustainability. Get an energy-efficient unit, and don’t use a larger one that is too big for your space.
2) Plan an environmental sustainable summer vacation
If you want to do your part to lower your carbon footprint, don’t take a plane. Planes are terrible for the environment because of their high carbon emissions. You happen to live in one of the best countries in the world, that’s also one of the largest. So, if you wanted, you can plan trips to some of the big cities in the U.S. while many of the locals are away. Or, you can spend some of the time in nature heading to a few of the best beaches anywhere in the world. And, if that’s not your scene, you can decide to spend a bit of your time in the mountains. The landscape and geography of the U.S. are diverse. Take a train, drive a car (electric is better), but don’t take a plane if you can avoid it.
3) Take an eco-vacation
There’s a whole new industry that has developed because of peoples’ concerns about environmental sustainability. Did you know that you can take an awesome eco-vacation? As a result, you can find yourself in places you would have never thought about until now. For instance, you can go diving into the beautiful waters off the coast of California, or even Hawaii. You can check out the fantastic nature that exists in a state like Louisiana. You can spend some time in the wilderness of the Appalachian Trail. Or, you can find yourself visiting the incredible formations at Antelope Canyon. In other words, there’s so much you can do when you immerse yourself in an eco-vacation in the U.S.
4) Practice green grilling
What’s a summer without a great cook-out on the Fourth of July or any other day of a vacation? Practice green grilling. There are many things that you can do to improve your environmental sustainability. It will mean potentially changing how you grill and the products that you buy, but it’s worth it. For instance, one of the first tips is not to use petroleum-based lighter fluids. Another idea for green grilling is to use natural gas. Natural gas happens to be the greenest fuel we have and burns cleaner than propane. So, now that you know, learn more about green grilling.
5) Clean out your closets for environmental sustainability
At the beginning of this post, we told you about all of the clothing and shoes that get thrown away. But, 70 percent of the world’s population can use that stuff. One of the best things you can do for the environment is to repurpose the shoes that you don’t wear anymore. Help the environment and micro-entrepreneurs in need of merchandise to sell so they can make a living. There’s no reason why shoes have to go into the trash when they can make a difference. And, if you have clothing that you need to get rid of, you can do that too.
Come on! Join the environmental sustainability revolution. We all need to play our part in saving our planet. There’s not another one for us. Stay tuned to this space for more ideas about sustainability.
