As we know, millions of people want to stop living a life of more stuff. Because of it, it’s given rise to the sharing economy and people wanting to spend time having more experiences. In other words, people learned that having more doesn’t necessarily make you happier. Moreover, spending time with others, building community, and doing socially good things are essential to happiness. As a result, by thinking about what’s essential in life, many explore nonprofit careers once again.
Every generation has its idealists who want to do social good. And because of it, there’s always a segment of the population that decides to engage in nonprofit careers. However, as you’ll learn in this article, you could still do something good for your community, and it could or could not involve your career. So, let’s get started and see how you could rise to meet the challenge of doing good for others.

Are Nonprofit Careers Good for You?
If you want to do something great for your community, sure, you could start by looking at nonprofit careers. The United States has about 1.5 million nonprofits, including schools, religious organizations, and cultural institutions. So, as you consider options, you could pursue a job within the sector, in something that’s a passion of yours. For instance, you may want to join groups like Teach for America or the Sierra Club.
If you choose to dive into one of the nonprofit careers (e.g., executive director, marketing, fundraising, programs), you want to think of a few things. First, you have to determine what kind of position you want. For example, some of the best paid are the fundraising teams, especially major gift officers. And, you also want to think about the budget, size, and scope of your target organizations. Most nonprofits have minimal budgets, which means that salaries tend to be lower than the for-profit sector.
Get Involved in a Local Group as a Volunteer
Depending on your values or priorities, you may want to skip working at a nonprofit. And that’s fine. Not everyone’s cut out to work in the nonprofit sector. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t volunteer your time. One way many people get involved in doing something for a good cause is by becoming a volunteer. Want to know one of the easiest ways to do it? Well, how about considering leading a fundraiser for your favorite cause?
You could decide to support a nonprofit cause by doing a fundraiser for them, and they’d really appreciate it. As an example, you could choose to take a look at this unique fundraising ideas guide. The reality is that nonprofits are always in need of financial support. But, you don’t always have to open your wallet to support a good cause. Instead, you could volunteer your time and decide with a group of friends to raise money for a great cause in your community.

Bring Your Expertise to a Nonprofit Board
Let’s face it. It used to be that many nonprofit boards were wealthy, not diverse, nor representative of the communities they serve. Well, that’s no longer tenable. And that means that nonprofit boards now more than ever need diverse subject matter experts with valuable experience to remake boards. Moreover, forward-thinking nonprofit groups understand that they can’t continue with business as usual in a multi-cultural world.
Nonprofits need expertise, diverse ideas, and points of view from different people. And that means many organizations seek diversity concerning ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic backgrounds, age, and gender. If this is of interest to you, reach out to preferred organizations in your area. Ask them how they vet and select board members, and make it a point to get involved with the nonprofit of your choice. For more information about serving on a nonprofit board, do your research and ask questions of others who do it.
Create Your Own Nonprofit or Social Enterprise
Finally, if you have the entrepreneurial spirit, you could create your own path. For example, you could establish your own nonprofit or for-profit social enterprise. While it used to be if you wanted to do social good, you founded a nonprofit, that’s no longer the case. Sure, you could go down the traditional path and learn how to establish a nonprofit. In essence, what it means is you get an IRS tax designation as a 501(c)(3) to allow you to accept donations for your social programs.
However, you could also choose to develop a for-profit social enterprise. By doing so, you run a nonprofit or for-profit business. If a for-profit, aside from existing exclusively to make a profit, you also measure your success on the social impact you make. The most famous social enterprises are Grameen Bank and Ashoka. Not to toot our own horn (but we will anyway), we’re the largest and most well-known social enterprise in North America doing shoe drive fundraisers.
In short, if you value helping in your community, there’s a way to get involved! You could consider various nonprofit careers, become a volunteer, or even serve on a board. The world, and your community, need idealists and do-gooders. So join the millions of others who are also doing it to make things better, not just for themselves but also for others.
