Any parent or educator knows that Teacher Appreciation Week happens in May. But who says we should celebrate our fantastic teachers only one week a year? Our team thinks we should celebrate educators all the time. If you believe like we do that any time can be a great time to honor teachers, let’s explore how to do it in ways that can give them even more resources and tools in the classroom. For instance, how about a fundraiser for their classrooms?!?

Why Limit Appreciation to One Week?

Before we discuss creative ways to give them more resources for their classrooms, let’s consider why appreciating our teachers all the time is essential. Educators are the backbone of our schools and future. They spend time with children and youth, teaching them what they need to know to become productive members of society. They do this using approaches such as project-based learning and other methods.

Still, here’s the thing: They need our support. As PTA, PTO, and other school groups may know, teachers often have to buy school supplies. They have to do it because some school districts don’t have the financial resources to provide what’s needed in classrooms. That’s a key reason why parents and communities seek to hold school fundraisers. School communities understand that they have to support educators.

Anytime Can Be Teacher Appreciation Week

With this in mind, we think any time of the year is Teacher Appreciation Week. Moreover, communities can show classroom teachers that they love them and want to support their efforts. In other words, they want to ensure that educators have what they need from the start of the school year to the end. That’s why selecting any time on the calendar to celebrate teachers and raise funds for them makes sense.

Celebrating teachers can include things like pop-up appreciation events. For example, they could surprise educators with goodies and classroom supplies. School communities can also have a few weeks peppered across the year where they ask students and parents to write thank-you notes. And when you celebrate educators at any time during the school year, it’s easy to motivate families and communities to give because it’s to support classrooms!

Building School Fundraisers Around Classroom Needs

You can make a big impact if you want to tie school fundraising ideas and support teachers and their classrooms. So, how do you get started in doing a special fundraiser for teachers? The first step is to survey teachers. In short, what you want to do if you lead a PTO, PTA, booster club, or other fundraising group is understand the need. What supplies do teachers at your school need?

Once you have that figured out, it’s time to think about school fundraising ideas. There are many of them! Consider the financial goal for your fundraiser or series of fundraisers to support teachers and their classrooms. Plan your fundraiser and then promote, promote, promote. As you do it, remember that you want to inform the community that their donations support teachers in their classrooms.

In other words, you want to be able to share with your community that teachers often have to buy their own supplies. You also want to ensure people realize that schools and communities can support this generosity. That’s where teacher appreciation week fundraisers come into play. The ultimate aim is to allow teachers to take home their full salaries. Instead, it’s a chance for the community to support teachers and their classrooms.

Energize Your School Community and Beyond

A great part of making any week Teacher Appreciation Week and including classroom fundraising is that you can get the entire community involved. One of the marketing content creation messages you can promote is that the event(s) are about the future. Sure, the fundraiser is raising funds for teachers and their classrooms. But the reality is that it’s about ensuring that children and youth (i.e., the future) have the best possible education.

We know that education is in continuous transformation. As a result, when you survey teachers, you may discover that they need more tech tools and arts and crafts to allow young minds to explore creativity. These elements are great to include in your teacher and classroom fundraisers. And if you do these fundraisers a few times a year, you have a chance to keep things fresh.

In sum, Teacher Appreciation Week is an awesome tradition. But it doesn’t just have to happen once a year in May. The truth is that all communities can support their educators at any point throughout the school year. When schools tie school fundraisers to the specific needs of teachers in their classrooms, it provides communities with a great way to make a meaningful difference. So, let’s show educators love and support at any time of year and use it as a force for a bigger impact!
