Do you know what the top three fundraising challenges are for many organizations? If your organization is looking for ways to raise money, knowing the challenges is essential so you can discover solutions. Through the years, our communities have shared a lot with us, and these are the top three challenges they consistently voice: (We have solutions below!)
- Getting people to donate.
- Keeping volunteers engaged.
- Spreading the word effectively.
If these challenges keep you up at night, searching for ways to raise money, let’s explore solutions no matter what fundraiser you decide to do. (See our 100+ fundraising ideas guide).

Getting People to Donate to Your Fundraiser
We wrote on our Facebook page that we have solutions to these common problems. The challenge with getting people to donate to your fundraiser is that they may not realize a few things. For one, they might not be clear on the impact. Second, the way to donate isn’t convenient for them. Finally, there’s no sense of urgency.
So, how can you encourage more donations to your fundraiser? For starters, make it a point to get great at storytelling! The second solution is to ensure you offer donors multiple ways to give (e.g., text-to-give, QR codes, landing pages, social media, etc.). Finally, to drive urgency, use deadlines and incentives.
Keeping Your Volunteers Engaged
Volunteers are essential to any fundraiser, but even the most dedicated volunteer may lose interest. Often, the challenges with volunteers include a lack of clear direction. What do you want them to do? Another challenge is that the fundraising project isn’t fun or rewarding. And finally, they don’t feel appreciated.
The solution for keeping volunteers engaged is simple. It’s essential for fundraising leaders to provide clear and concise directives. For instance, collect 2 bags of shoes for a shoe drive fundraiser. To make a fundraiser fun, consider adding group activities and team challenges. Finally, always thank your volunteers—every step of the way. Show them the love!

Spreading the Word Effectively for Your Fundraiser
The third common challenge is also easy to overcome if you know why it happens. To spread awareness, posting once and being shy about marketing is a challenge. Also, many organizations forget to use multiple platforms. Another common mistake in fundraising marketing is not engaging with people when they comment or share.
So, how do you get around the challenges? Make it a point on social media to share regular updates and testimonials. Use pictures and storytelling. Also, make it a point to use multiple platforms, such as texts and emails, to meet your donors where they are in the fundraising journey. And finally, leverage partnerships and word-of-mouth (e.g., using NextDoor).
